Numerous religions are practiced in Indonesia. Approximately 86% of the population is Muslims, 5-6% is Protestants and 3% are Catholics. The Hindu's form the minority as only 3.4% of the population are Hindus. The constitution of Indonesia states that every person has his/her own free will to choose and practice their religion.
Six Religions
Officially the constitution recognizes only six religions, Islam, Protestantism, Catholicism, Hinduism, Confucianism and Buddhism. Since, a kaleidoscope of religions are practiced in Indonesia it becomes almost unavoidable to prevent religious clashes. The political administation has a great impact on the relationship of different religious groups. The political parties have to be very careful and immaculate in their remarks in order to avoid any religious upheaval.
Hinduism and Buddhism
Initially Hinduism and Buddhism were religious systems that dominated the Indonesian people but now Indonesians are influenced by Islam and Christianity and. Both these religions are characterized by Abrahamic faiths. The traders bought their religion along and Hinduism started developing as a religious belief in Indonesia but today Hinduism is practiced only by a small percentage of the population of Indonesia.
